re: mild winter


Peggy, this happens to me all the time here anymore.  For the 
most part (like unless you already have flower buds or something 
flowering) perennials that are simply sending up leaves won't be 
done in.  If you are below zero for a really extended period 
they'll need some recovery time, but they should be fine.  Also, 
how much snow do you have???  If foliage and crowns are 
snow-covered, they should be dandy.  Snow is a marvelous 
insulator.

If there are some things that you are really concerned about - 
borderline hardiness for your zone and stuff, cover with an old 
sheet or a few layers of the heavier floating row cover. 

What kind of poopies are you growing?  :)
