Hi Carol --
My favorite gardening tool is an energetic guy with muscles and the
right attitude...:->
However, I also like the following:
Heavy sharp butcher knive -- for dividing things like astilbes, hostas,
etc.
Good sharp scissors for deadheading, trimming
The Claw (tall & short varieties)- a great cultivator for smallish beds
like my veggie bed. My grandkids use it when they're helping -- needs
very little strength to really churn the soil nicely.
heavy duty Digger Trowels -- triangular hand spade, stainless steel,
great for transplanting seedlings, bulbs.
Really big hand scoops for compost, etc. Holds as much as a shovel,
gives you more control.
Small light weight shovel (about 36 inches with a 6 inch head) - for
quicky moves of smaller plants,working in tight spaces.
There are more, though probably not as many as the ones I've tried &
abandoned...
