I suggest 3 - 4" of mulch -- it'll keep most weed seeds from germinating
and any weeds that develop new seeds settling on the surface of the mulch
will be VERY easy to pull. If you sterilize the soil, you'll likely kill
off beneficial organisms that you will soon miss....
