Remove all visible weeds.  
Water to a depth of 12".
Cover with clear plastic, 4mm thick, and smooth down.
Seal the edges by burying them with soil.  It has to be a tight seal to
retain all the heat.
If weeds sprout and push up the plastic, go in and remove, then reseal
the plastic.
How long it takes, depends on how hot the weather is for a certain number
of days.  Last summer, here, was not hot enough to do it in less than 8
weeks.  There is a formula, but I don't remember it, sorry.
