Re: Zone systems was Re: White Flower Farm codes

Connie,

Well, the AHS heatzone book published by Time/Life is out:
"Heat-zone Gardening: How to choose plants that thrive in your region'
warmest weather" by Dr. H. Marc Cathey (List: $24.95) I ordered my copy
from Amazon (Price: $17.47): http://www.amazon.com last week and it came in
yesterday.

The book is not terribly large (192 pages) about 8 inches by 10 inches. The
first 65 pages are an excellent introduction to the concepts used to
properly select plants for a garden habitat and are well written and well
illustrated. I was pleasantly surprised to find a concrete definition for a
full sun site (minimum of 6 hours between 10am and 4pm with 3 hours in the
hotter areas being the equivalent). The remainder of the book is devoted to
plant profiles: typically 4 per page, each illustated with a photograph.
Book contains a list of sources for native plants, bibliography and a quite
decent index.

I found the book well designed, interesting and potentially useful (though
I was hoping for something more comprehensive). I'm glad that I bought it.
I showed it to friends in the trade today and they plan to buy copies also.

I got my new Monrovia catalog the other week. I was disappointed to find
that the AHS heat zones were NOT in it as I had been informed.

If you want me to repost a description of the Bailey's ecoregion system,
drop me a note.
