Re: Crown Vetch
Thanks for the terrific list of suggestions. I've actually tried some
of these--the daylilies (common and any extras from my gardens) as you
know, snow in summer,--both growing but not very well. Lambs ears have
grown, and I've transplanted lots of daisies from the fields hoping they
would take hold. I've tried to do all this piece meal, and maybe that's
the problem. It's quite a big space--maybe 50 feet long and 12 feet
high--can't be mowed, and I've never had the energy to tackle digging it
all up. Maybe putting plastic down over what's not desireable, letting
it die, and then replanting through the plastic would work. I hesitated
to use roundup since there are things there I'd like to keep. I think
the major problem comes when it gets very hot and dry in the summer--it
gives a major setback even to things like daylillies. Even cleome
self-seeds, which threaten to smother a lot of my gardens, don't seem to
do much in this location.
I didn't realize the junipers would be that easy to root-I'd like to
try that. I purposely got very small plants to put in so they'd be
easier to plant--it's hard to dig when you're standing on a steep hill.
They're still alive, but haven't grown much in 3 years. I'd like totry
taking cuttings from them.
I'm in central Massachusetts-zone 4, I think. Judy Warner
