Don't fret with daylilies looking dreadful in the heat of the summer.  That
is natural after they bloom.  You can cut them back to a couple of inches
right after they flower, and they will respond quite well.  In a couple of
weeks, they will send out new growth and look good.

Have you tried to add organic matter when you plant?  Don't worry about
tilling the entire area, just prepare each planting hole--doesn't take much
extra, but your plants will thank you.

I would use roundup on most of the area and hand weed around those plants
that you want.  Or dig up those plants you want to keep and pot them or put
them in a holding bed somewhere.  Roundup the entire area and wait a couple
of weeks.  Then you can prepare your planting holes and go from there.  Be
patient, Judy.  Take a smaller area at a time if need be.  Remember, "good
things come to those who wait."
