Yes, books with pictures are better than unillustrated lists. 

And don't forget all the shrub ideas for shade, depending on your soil. 
You'll have something to look at in the winter as well. George Schenk
also has some useful books on shade plants, including trees, shrubs,
groundcovers, as well as perennials.

Foxgloves (digitalis) are among my favorites for shade.
