Amy:
My best suggestion is Pachysandra terminalis or Japanese spurge. I grow some
under stairs to a deck. It gets no direct sun, very little indirect sun and
is thriving.
In his book on shade gardening, George Schenk says "Spurge is at its best in
full or dappled shade, beneath trees or shrubbery or in odd shady corners."
It is tough. Just be sure to water it from time to time. Under trees can be
very dry as well as dark.
