Hi, Linda --
My four favorites are:
Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials, by Phillips & Burrell,
1993, Rodale Press;
Perennials for American Gardens, Clausen & Ekstrom, 1989, Random House;
Encyclopedia of Perennials: A Gardener's Guide, C. Woods, 1992, Facts on
File, Inc.
Complete Guide to Flower Gardening, 1995, Better Homes & Gardens,
Meredith Corp.
While these are not encyclopedic in the way that Hortus or other true
encyclopedias are, they are great for beginning to intermediate
gardeners, well illustrated and informative (and encouraging!).
