One of the best ones I have found is called, "The Wise Garden Encyclopedia",
it is published by HarperCollins Publishers. I have one of the 1953 versions
and also a newer updated one of 1990. It has both common and botanical
names, with culture, and also propagation information. It is an excellent
reference book for beginning and established gardeners.
