Linda, I would buy the new perennial book that Better Homes and Gardens has
out now. It also features annuals, some trees and shrubs, and bulbs. Not
only does it list plants by Latin and common names, but will also suggest
companion plants, how to propagate your plants, and the ideal planting
conditions and helpful hints for the particular cultivar. The book gives
you great color pictures of every plant, sample layouts, small articles
from gardeners in different zones and who like different garden styles.
They will guide you through the seasonal plantings, letting you know what
will bloom when, what color flowers will bloom at a certain time, etc.
I found it invaluable when I first started and I still refer to it after
five years. There are other more expensive books available that go into
greater detail, but for under $40, you can't beat what you get in this
book.
