Problems with Kaichen and/or other Chinese Nurseries


	Hello:
		I had an import permit for the entire catalogue from
Kaichen.  Recently I received a letter from the Canadian Animal and
Plant Health Directorate, Plant Protection Division.  This is a quote
from the letter:

	"This letter is to notify you that your Permit to Import for
nursery stock from China is suspended effective March 16, 1998, until
further notice.  This action is necessary to prevent the introduction of
a serious nematode pest, Ditylenchus destructor and other quarantine
pests, from China.  Discussions will be occurring with Chinese officials
in an attempt to rectify this problem.. A copy of your suspended or
amended permit will be sent to you shortly."

		This may account for the fact that another person in
Victoria, BC, Canada who was part of an order from the US has his plants
sitting in US customs.  If anyone has already ordered from a Chinese
source, or is contemplating doing so, they might want to wait for a bit.
Particularly if there is a requirement for up front cash.  Hope this
does not distress or depress anyone to greatly, but I felt it was
information that should be passed along since there has been a bit of
discussion of plant material from China recently.
