platycodon from seed

I'm hoping to start a large bed of platycodon (ballonflower) in our
garden this summer.  I want to try growing it from seed to save $$. 
Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?  The bed will be
about 8x5, bordered on the sides by rhodo's and buddleia.
