What a wonderful thread! I agree that nothing evokes long-buried
memories like a particular scent. My summertime favorites include:
roses (Comte de Chambord, a Portland, wafts its scent 10 or more feet
away); the Regale lily, the first scented lily to bloom here (followed
by the lucscious Orientals and Trumpets); lavender (love it mingled with
the roses); thyme & many of the herbs (basil! dill! fennel!); &
agastache, a perennial; some daylilies with their wonderful lemony
scent; some bearded irises; some narcissus (esp the poeticus types) and
tulips; many of the scented geraniums (yum). And of course, the
alyssum, lilacs, viburnums & all you've variously noted.
But how about this? New-mown grass; the charged air just before a
summer thunderstorm; ... the whole garden just after the rain has
stopped; warm summer air blowing through the open windows late at
night; the smell of the fresh turned soil warmed by the sun; tomato
foliage; the warm skin of a young child after playing on a hot day; the
sun-warmed fur of your cat (smells like hay to me). Summer brings its
blessings in many guises, doncha think?
