Any of the water soluable fertilizers are just fine. Try to feed once a week if you can. I also plant them in a generous amount of organic matter. You said you don't have compost, but you could use a combination of peat moss and decomposed cow manure that you can get at any garden center and most supermarkets. My favorite other than compost is mushroom soil. Look in the digest for that thread.
