I, too, have been growing centranthus for about 8 years.  It is not agressive here in zone 6, but once in a while it will seed about, not nearly enough.  I grow it in well-amended soil and have a patch in full sun that blooms once and then sporadically throughout the summer and a patch in partial shade.  The one in part shade blooms all summer for me.  I have tried the C. 'Alba' but have not had much luck.
