* With all the recent hoopla about herbal remedies, Univ. of Fla. added fuel to the flame with an announcement that
echinacea may be good for you. UF nutritional scientist Susan Percival found that echinacea -- purple coneflower --
stimulated white blood cells, which fight infection. The announcement apparently lends credibility to herbalists who
have argued for centuries that the herb fights the common cold. Percival announced her findings after a preliminary
study using 10 healthy, college-aged men. She cautioned that echinacea should be taken only when cold symptoms
are present, because a stimulated immune system will produce free radicals which could damage healthy tissues.
Percival said she will seek a national grant to expand her investigation. (352) 392-1991.
