Boy can I relate to your frustrations! The best advice I have is, if at all
possible, try to read mostly from LOCAL writers at first, as you're
learning. I was fortunate enough to have Ann Lovejoy give me my "start"
into garden books and advice. She is nationally (internationally?) known
but gardens just 2-3 hours aways from me in a nearly identical climate.
Mostly, (and this is from one "information person" to another, which I
assume you are since you've been reading as much as possible) is you just
have to adopt the attitude that you will learn as you go, you will make many
mistakes, but that's okay, its how you learn. Even if you didn't make
mistakes and lose plants, etc., you will probably change your mind and
preferences often enough to cause change in the garden anyway!
This is comnig on the backside of 9 years of gardening.

For mine is just a little old fashioned garden where the
flowers come together to praise the Lord and teach all
who look upon them to do likewise.
