.
GEUM triflorum - "Prairie Smoke".  (GAY-um. tri-FLOOR-um)  ROSACEAE.    Early
blooming prairie plants with  pink-reddish flowers and  wispy silver pink seed
heads. This plant is native to the central states of the USA.   Nice plants
for a little short grassy area mixed in with Antennaria and  Pulsatilla.  Nice
used as an edging or mixed in the rock garden.   Plants flower  4-8" tall  and
form short ground hugging rosettes of pinnately  dissected grayish green
leaves that are 6" long. Leaves are softly covered in hairs.   This GEUM
Blooms  in May-June. Great looking ground cover too.   Plant in a fertile well
drained soil in full sun.   Does not like to be to wet in winter.   Plants can
be divide in the spring after flowering.   flowers are not bright in color but
are charming, once flowering is done silver seed tails are formed.   These
tails are long and in a mass they look like smoke rising up from the ground-
hence the name 'Prairie Smoke'  this is one of those native novelty plants, if
your tastes run only to the bright and showy then it is not for you. But if
you like diffrent and unique plants to mix in here and there in you land
scape-give this one a try.   Zones 2-5.
