Re: Euphorbia

No, Kitt, I haven't tried collecting seed as mine seed around so
freely. They are tough to catch and I think the best plan would be
to tie a bit of old panty hose around the developing seed head to
catch them when they pop as you'll never do it by just checking. One
day they are seedpods and the next day they've dispersed.

Am going to try to get some from E. palustris this year, as it's in a
spot where I'm not sure about it seeding.

I've never covered self-sown seeds or done anything - seeds just
sprout all over the map; some near the parent plants and some not so
near. You should get seedlings if you've got flowering plants. Look
for a relatively tall seedling, say 1.5 to 2", with a glaucous
reddish stem and two narrow oval blue-green seed leaves..most euphorb
seedlings look pretty similar, tho' those without red in their color
won't have the reddish stem to the seedling. They are, to my mind,
substantial seedlings; they stand up straight with their seed leaves
stiff and flat out, unless they've been hit by some bit of woody
material and bent down.

Should appear for you around April, I'd think...maybe a bit earlier.
I see them end April as I'm doing clean up. You might see them in
March, considering that you're so much farther south than I am.

I wouldn't cover dropped seeds with too much of anything. Rain tends
to cover seeds to the depth they need and some won't sprout if
covered too deeply.

Some euphorbs require cold stratification and some don't and I've
never gotten that sorted, although I'm pretty sure those with E.
characias blood in them do.
