New garden plot

I had a tree taken down a few days ago and noticed that where the
sawdust was left on the ground, it killed the grass. Applying this same
principle to the stump grindings, I spread them out in the rough shape
of the garden and am now allowing it to kill the grass where I want to
till and plant the garden . . . .which leads me to the question for all
you knowledgeable gardeners out there.
What's to keep the stump grindings from killing whatever I plant in
there after I till it all in? I'm assuming it's high in something . . .
nitrogen perhaps? Am I right in assuming that's what kills the grass?
Can I amend the garden with something to slow down or stop this process
(or somehow use it to my advantage . .a stretch, I know) when I till the
grass/grindings mixture into the soil?
Thanks in advance for any advice you have.
Best regards,
