Another direction to consider: what species of tree was it? Some trees,
such as Tree-of-Heaven, Ailanthus (sp?), are heavy producers of natural
herbicides. Remnants from a freshly cut tree would be equally poisonous to
surrounding plants. Not the likeliest possibility, but...
