Hi Nan,

No one has mentioned Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea' as a candadate for your
tall thin screen. It is easy and fast growing, can be sheared or pruned
naturally and in my experience, has no problems. A friend has it as
garden dividing hedges in Capistrano Beach. Here it is mixed with Myrica
californica which was a little dicy to get started. But once it was, it
has had no problems. This is a beautiful tree/trained shrub with small
shining foliage and a lovely scent.

I've also seen Tristania laurina used as a screening shrub, but this
requires more clipping. All three are drought tolerant and suitable for
your medit. style garden.
