I would do it now as well. Get rid of the center and divide the edges where
the new growth is into several plants. I've done mums at various times
through the year without much effect on the blooming. You might as well
pinch them back while you're at it. Unless the weather changes this is
going to be an early season for us, and they will need pinching soon anyway.
