Re:Hot Weather/Gardening style

Hi all,

We hare having a weird spring here in Northern California as well, but not
because of heat. It is raining a bit today, and has generally been cooler
than normal, interspersed with some really warm days. Many of my roses are
in bloom now, but will be plagued with powdery mildew because it keeps on
raining just enough to favor the mildew.

My gardening style is big on spring and fall blooming flowers, as I do not
like to garden much when the real summer heat arrives. My main priority is
fragrance. I grow lots of old roses, fragrant annuals, perennials and
shrubs. We have a great farmers market here, so I grow fewer vegetables
than I used to, which leaves much more room for flowers. I do have a good
herb garden.

I'd be interested in how others with very hot summers keep their gardens
looking good in the worst of the heat.
