Re: mulching T.B. iris was: Hot Weather/Gardening style

Donna, I'd remove the mulch, esp. in your climate, which is hot and
esp. should it be rainy and damp. Warmth and moisture encourage rot,
plus mulch will conceal any problems at the rhizome (borers, rot,
etc.) until it is too late to take effective counter measures. Tall
bearded iris would rather have the top of their rhizome (not the
whole thing) exposed. In very cold climates, or in medium cold
climates when re-setting them quite late in the season, a winter
mulch doesn't hurt and may help avoid heaving, but it needs removal
in spring.

They won't work their way up out of the mulch, but the mulch, being
organic, will compact and rot, so eventually, their rhizomes would
again be exposed...but by that time, the probably would have rotted,
too:-)
