Re: Yard Labels

Interesting discussion... I try to label everything with latin names,
which are not a big deal to me, that way I know the exact identity of
each plant. I use the metal labels from paw-paw everlast which are
cheap and easy to use. On the front side, I write the latin name in
pencil. ON the back side, I write the latin name, the place I bought
the plant and the planting date in pencil. By the way, I find that
permanent marker (Sharpies) fade both on plastic and on metal
markers. Pencil, on the other hand, seems to last forever.

In practice, there are many plants that are not labeled -- mostly
those that are easy for me to remember or that arrived without a
latin name, like the alstromerias that my neighbor dug from his yard,
the black knight buddleia (though the golden globe is labeled), the
mystery daylilies. I nearly always label salvias as I'd never
remember all of my 20-odd species. Ceanothus are also labeled as I
have many hybrids, ranging from ground cover to 12 feet tall - how
could I possibly remember them?
