Chantal, you used to see the same thing in Toronto, and I suspect any place
with a large Italian population. It doesn't seem to be a tradition carried
on. The children don't want to eat weeds or be seen picking them.
Right off hand I can't remember the details but a lot of plants that we
consider weeds were deliberately brought over from Europe as food or as
medicinal plants. Soapwort is a pretty common "weed" in my area
but I'm pretty sure that 150 years ago it would have been a lot more
appreciated than it is today. Same thing with self-heal (Prunella) which is
all through my lawn.
