Re: Comments on these perennials appreciated - Knautia

Isn't there an annual form of knautia? I can remember growing them when I
first started gardening because the common name, "pincushion flower",
intrigued me. I threw out some seed and they grew like weeds. Tall,
lanky, and weedy-looking as I recall (think cosmos). However, the blooms
themselves were beautiful. I had an assortment of colors, mostly pastels,
with a few novelties like burgundy and a near black. In this mix was a
pure white, which lended itself very well with the burgundy.

These plants reseeded easily, much like cosmos. They would do well if you
planted something more substantial in front of them to hide the unappealing
foliage and to support the many blooms. They did bloom all summer and were
perfect for cutting. Then I found perennials and pooh-poohed annuals.

I think I just talked myself into planting these again next year if I can
find the room. Perhaps this calls for a new garden bed, no?
