My mother has lots of African violets propagated from cuttings. Some
plants had both light-green and dark-green leaves; the differences
didn't appear to be related to the amount of light, age of leaves, or
position on the plant.
She thought that perhaps color was an indicator of health, which in
turn would affect how successfully it would root as a cutting, so the
next time she took cuttings from that plant, she selected both a light
leaf and a dark leaf. Both rooted and, strangely, the first cutting
produced light-purple flowers and light-green leaves, while the other
cutting produced dark-purple flowers and dark-green leaves.
Is this a fluke?
