Sarah Bernhardt is one of the most commonly available pink doubles in my
area and I have three of them. It's an excellent increaser, which is why it
is commonly available. Big shell pink flowers with a hint of red in the
middle of the flower. My nose isn't very good but people who CAN tell a
manure pile from a rose garden tell me it is scented.
If you don't have a peony ring on it already (these are best positioned
before the shoots are more than a few inches tall) you'd better get ready to
stake it before the buds open. This is a common problem with double
peonies-the flower heads are just too heavy for the stems and any rain or
wind will flatten them.A couple of stakes and some twine will hold it
upright but the rings are more effective and less obtrusive. The singles and
Japanese peonies are a lot less trouble but I would never give up my doubles
no matter how many of the other I have.
You'll almost certainly have this peony for as long as you garden in your
present location as peonies can outlast several gardeners.
