Thanks to everyone for the information on poison ivy. I'm prone to
skin rashes so I'm using herbicide to deal with it. For years we've been
intending to replace these rather pitiful privets with Euonymous
'Manhattan', which is evergreen, fast growing, and tough. So, if the
herbicide hurts the privet, it's no big deal; just incentive to get
moving on the Euonymous.
Dh claims to be immune to p.i. and his attitude drives me crazy.
Before I learned to recognize p.i., I would call dh to identify any weed
with three leaves. Bare-handed, he would rush over and call out eagerly,
"I'll pull it out for you! *I'm* immune to poison ivy!" It never turned
out to be p.i., but I'd always flip out over the illogic of not taking
the simple precaution of wearing gloves. (Skip this if hissy fits drive
you nuts:) "Are you crazy? For crying out loud, what if you're wrong?
Why won't you put on gloves? What is this macho stuff?" etc. etc. He
finally gave it up -- not because he agreed, but because he didn't want
to deal with my reaction. But now I can provide him with proof that
immunity sometimes goes away.
