It's an individual thing and I don't think it's very common, but I know a few
people who simply cannot handle them without gloves. Our local daffodil
society has big sales of bulbs in the fall. Some we get from a large grower
who welcomes our labor in clearing out his excess stock to make room for new
cultivars. Others come from our own gardens when we dig and divide. In all
cases we price well below market. During the summer we treat these bulbs
with fungicide and dry them in a cool, well-ventilated barn. When we then
gather to bag and tag them for the sale, we all wear surgical gloves because
of possible fungicide residue--we all need to be extremely cautious about our
health when using garden chemicals.
