Oh boy, Nancy, you have my sympathy!! We finally got rid of one (I hope)
that was terrorizing our garden. I don't think we did anything really
effective, except annoy the heck out of him...
You probably already know, they are after the worms and grubs in the soil.
So, the better your soil, lots of organic matter, mulch and moisture, the
more attractive it is to them.
We bought a live trap, and baited it with fishing worms contained in a nylon
stocking. Wasn't interested. Then, I found a web site that said they will
eat rotting fruit, so we tried baiting it with that. All we caught was a
box turtle (it was really kind of funny: great big trap, little bitty
turtle). The novelty wore off fairly quickly, when I had to go out every
morning and set up all the pots he had knocked over in his quest, not to
mention mourning the sauce tomatoes he dug up.
Anyway, we had a brush pile in the yard that we had collected for the past
year or so, and we put it through the shredder a couple of weeks ago. When
we got to the bottom of the pile, we discovered a large hole dug out;
evidently that was his den. We couldn't really tell if there was a tunnel
involved, but we pushed the small brush into the hole and burned it, then
filled the hole with soil. Anyway, he hasn't been back since.
The web site I found has some products that are supposed to help repel them.
We were about ready to order some, when he went away, so I can't attest to
the effectiveness. But you might want to check it out:

Good luck (I share your pain)
