I mentioned our scree beds in a post, and someone asked how we built them.
After clearing the sod, we put down that permeable black weed fabric (not
plastic) that allows water to go through. Then we put up four layers of
landscape timbers, joined at the corners with a long piece of reefer bar
(iron) to hold the joints firmly. In the beds, we put composted leaf mold
at the bottom layer, then a layer of coarse sand, and then a gravel
dressing. These well-drained beds help us here in muggy Illinois summers
and soggy winters to bring rock garden and alpine plants through the rough
times. The down side is that EVERYTHING in the world wants to self-sow into
them...
