lilac color change

A couple of years ago I was looking for a deep purple lilac. I
finally found one listed with a mail order company (don't remember the name
of the lilac or company). A year later, it bloomed a little bit and the
flower was white.
That fall I then bought another, different lilac locally that was
supposed to be deep purple. It is evidentally not going to bloom this year,
but probably will next year.
The odd thing is that the first plant (two distinct locations in the
garden), which bloomed again this year and fairly heavily this time, is
clearly, both in bud and in flower, a light purple, what I think of as the
"common lilac" color.
I'm not unhappy either way because I love lilacs, gardening in
general, and surprises, but I am curious if anyone of you has had a color
change like this with lilacs ????
