To Susan and David,
The only way you will have a lilac the color you desire is to buy a named
variety. There is an old one name 'Charles Joly' (I hope that's right) plus
a number of new ones with deep saturated color. The common lilac, syringa
vulgaris, can vary on color from very light and not attractive to a bit
deeper and more attractive.
If a named variety and true to the variety, it should not vary in color.

This company is Canadian, shipping to the US. You are not too late this year
as it is located in Quebec, much colder than your location. Mr. Moro, the
owner has collected all the many commercial and species lilacs that he can
