No, Marge, surprisingly I did not do anything to protect the pots
and we had a very cold spell (near zero or below) early in December without
any snow cover or warning (it was a warm dry fall). So maybe those pots do
insulate. In the past, I've mainly used them for annuals. Come to think of
it though, I did have an artemisia silver mound in one for five winters
(it's still doing well but I've moved it to ground level) ...
The little hostas are doing very well now indeed and I've just added
a new guinea impatiens and a brightly veined chartreuse coleus to each pot
for color. They are in high shade under a Japanese tree lilac.

Most interesting, Susan. I have often wondered if those pots had any
insulating value as they appear to be made of something similar to
Styrofoam insulation board...probably a totally different formula of
whatever, but you know what I mean. Did you do anything to protect
the pot and roots over winter or just leave them to fend for
themselves?
