Duncan,
Tell him he could do either, really as their roots are still in the
ball and haven't thought of moving yet. Probably stress the trees
less to regrade the ground around them, however as lifting them with
the normal backhoe operator could easily damage the root ball. Won't
hurt them and would be better than having them planted that much too
deep.
