Claire,
I was waiting a bit to see if you got any response to this post. Since you
didn't, I'll chime in a little here.
I must say I'm puzzled why the Rocky Mountains and/or the Mississippi river
still stops pests and diseases from being shared with one coast from the
other. You have Iris borer, Kudzu and Japanese Beetles - we do not. We
have root weevils, Sudden Oak Death (marching north from California) and
probably some horrible exotic plant (i.e. weed) you do not. (do you have
bind weed? Wild cucumber? Horsetail rush?)
I know there is a diligent/strict plant material and agricultural
inspection that takes place before any nursery plants or food products are
loaded on the truck to go east or to California and they are inspected again
on the other end. That takes care of the growers, but what about people who
dig up plants from their gardens and take them along when they move? We are
either dang lucky, or those nursery inspectors perform little miracles every
day! :)

Growers ( many comercial growers are now there) on the West Coast do not
need to worry about iris borers. I think they are still east of the
Mississippi and ours alone to deal with. The question of iris borers is
depressing and whatever else you have give thanks it is almost certainly not
borers.
