===>That would be a fun project, Gene. Every year the columns could then be
published in book form. For those who don't know, I am an editor by
profession, although usually I work on business textbooks, but every quarter
I put on my gardening hat and edit the 64-page journal of the American
Daffodil Society.

A good editor does not destroy the voice of the author but makes the author's
work look even better than it did when it was submitted. Sometimes the editor
also has to make the work accessible to the reader.

But I sympathize with the magazine and newspaper editors who have publishers
and advertisers to answer to--that's why some authors are better off not
submitting to these venues in the first place.

Yes, it is, Gene. More of that lowest-common-denominator thinking, plus greed
for rights at the cheapest price. Sometimes it seems that everyone makes a
buck from the author's work except the author!
