Bill & Gene,
This discussion reminded of how often greed leaves the gardener without
credit for his/her hard work also. Magazines send photographers out to
"shoot" beautiful gardens, have someone write an article around the photos
and then publish the whole thing without giving the garden owner any
acknowledgement at all! Furthermore, the photos are sold to others for
their use to make advertising copy, again without identifying the garden or
gardener. Giving credit to the gardener who did all the hard work is the
LEAST a publication can do since the only one making any money is the
photographer or publisher. This is a very sore subject with owners of much
photographed gardens in this area. Nothing will change until there is a
united stand demanding a change of policy.

But I sympathize with the magazine and newspaper editors who have publishers
and advertisers to answer to--that's why some authors are better off not
submitting to these venues in the first place.
Yes, it is, Gene. More of that lowest-common-denominator thinking, plus
greed
for rights at the cheapest price. Sometimes it seems that everyone makes a
buck from the author's work except the author!
