I think you were had by your friend too, Gene. I still think there is a big
difference between selling photos of your garden and selling photos of mine.
You are a commercial nursery and should always be credited unless you specify
otherwise. It is presumed that your garden exists to promote your business
(yes, I know there are the personal reasons too). So your photographer
friend is denying you a commercial opportunity, PLUS, since you also
photograph and have made a name for yourself (and could sell stock photos if
you desired), your friend is also in direct competition with you, using your
own garden against you.
None of that is the case in my own personal garden. But I do think all
gardeners should be aware that any professional photographer in their garden
is likely to try to sell his or her photos, without necessarily giving any
credit for the gardener. So it is up to you whether you permit the
photography in the first place. I would hope you would give permission,
because that's how we get these photos in the books and web sites we rely on.
