In my experience, when growing clematis through shrubs or trees, you can
just prune off the dead stuff when they start to leaf out. Otherwise, I
just let them do their thing. I had a lot of trouble remembering the whole
pruning scheme for the different varieties until I read some writer who
advised just pruning out what wasn't growing, and it has worked for me.
