I have recently tried using our microwave to sterilise compost (organic +
vermiculite) before sowing seeds. I usually give it about 4 mins per pound at
900w. Seemed great - no damping off across a great range of seedlings - first
time ever.
But though it doesn't seem harmful, After a week of being kept at ~ 70deg F,
strange fungus fruiting bodies have appeared out of the compost. There are two
types - one on long thin stalks and nearly transparent - with black spores,
the other stalkless and yellow with slightly conical bodies.
Anyone else experienced this? And what's the best method of sterilisation?
