Donna,
I "steal" starts from my patch of Filipendula rubra 'Venusta' all the time
to pot up for the nursery and its easy. It would have been easier to do
this when new growth was just appearing, but if it isn't too hot, you should
still be able to steal.
The roots are fairly shallow and grow horizontal offsets that can be cut
from the others will a sharp spade or Felcos. Do a little shallow digging
and try to uncover some roots so you can see which way they are growing,
then cut the laterals and dig the clump. If yours is growing in nice
prairie soil, the roots may be deeper than mine which are growing in dry
part shade.
It is a beautiful plant - I also like the white form - Filipendula ulmaria.
I just bought the variegated leafed F. ulmaria. It has splashes of gold on
the leaves that will light up the shade.
Another Filipendula look alike that I am trying for the first time is
Persicaria polymorpha. It has large leaves like Persicaria 'Firetail' but
the flowers are taller & very white. It has the same "Astilbe look alike"
flower as the Filipendula. Very nice.
I don't think you are on the wrong list :).

Subject: filipendula rubra Queen of the Prairie question
I am probably on the wrong darn list again... but :)
Anyone know how to propagate Queen of the Prairie? (filipendula rubra) I
would like to start some at the nature center and have a nice natural
stand of it in my yard. (for those who don't know, built here a few
years back and left the natural weed patch grow to see what developed...
one of the many treasures found here)....
Last fall collected the seeds (or what appeared to be seeds) and
sprinkled some out there. Another group we refrigerated, another left in
a jar and tried starting them in the greenhouse... none sprouted this
spring anywhere.
So... should I try to dig up a section and transplant that way? Anyone
know what I will find as far as a root system? Will I find some kind of
a tuber or just massive roots that go to the middle of the earth?
Thanks in advance,
Donna
