I am so excited!! 2 months ago, I planted a bird of paradise in my new
garden here in New Orleans. Everyone warned me that it would take 4 to 5
years before it started blooming - all the books said it had to be "well
established." I finally found the plant at a local nursery (& paid a lot for
it). A wonderful lady at the nursery suggested a trick - in order to trick
the plant into thinking it's root bound, cut off the bottom 3" of the pot &
then sink the remainder into the ground. Since then, I've examined each new
growth, wishing without much hope, that it was a flower. Until now, there's
been 6 new leaves. Then, last week, another new stalk came up, but it looked
a little different. Today, I finally realized that it's a flower!! It hasn't
opened yet, but it should in the next couple of days. I am so excited - my
first bird of paradise flower!! Hopefully, there will be a lot more.
