No need to do that they will grow fast once they start. Were people go wrong 
is planting them to deep.  They are not bulbs and should not be planted more 
than 1.5 inch deep.  In the wild most species grow in shallow rocky soils 
were the rhizomes are exposed or just under the soil surface.
