Paul, I am amazed that Liatris are not bulbs. They sure looked like it
when I planted 100 of them! Now I'm wondering if what I have 25 gallon pots
of is something else? I've never grown it before, only seen it in other
gardens and had no idea what the underground parts looked like. Maybe the
difference is between the wild species you mention and cultivated ones. I'm
afraid I've planted them much deeper than 1.5 inches too......I wonder if
whatever it is will flower.

No need to do that they will grow fast once they start. Were people go wrong
is planting them to deep. They are not bulbs and should not be planted more
than 1.5 inch deep. In the wild most species grow in shallow rocky soils
were the rhizomes are exposed or just under the soil surface.
